If you’re planning your upcoming Bali trip and looking for something unusual to add to your itinerary, I know the best secret on the island!
Located in Gianyar, on the east side of the island, Sababay Winery is one of Asia’s top wineries. Holding a multitude of prestigious international awards, you can trust me when I say – they know their wine.
I recently spent an afternoon doing their Tour & Taste guided tour. It was absolutely the best!
The tour began by being welcomed by a wonderful team of wine enthusiasts, both local and Italian. The team was extremely professional and made us feel right at home.
We were then taken through the winery where we learnt about their extensive wine-making process. Being in a tropical climate, Sababay Winery uses stainless steel barrels instead of wooden ones to keep the wine at a chilled temperature.
While we were able to see the entire wine-making process, the actual vineyards are based in Gerogak on the north coast of Bali. With cool nights and rich latero volcanic soil, this creates the optimum environment to grow grapes.
One of my favorites part of the tour was learning how invested the winery was in working with the local community. An exclusive, fair-trade arrangement has been made between the regions farmers and the winery which has provided in high quality harvests and a boost to the local economy.
The winery currently makes 6 varieties of New Latitude wine which you are able to try in the tasting room following the tour. My personal favorite was the Lambrusco, which I took a bottle home with me.
During the tasting, you’ll also have each glass be paired with a delicious Indonesian snack (honestly, I probably ate too many, but they were really yum!)
If you haven’t already, make sure to check out their Instagram page and book a trip directly from their website! It’s perfect for both large groups, couples, and individual travelers - who doesn’t love a good wine tour? :)
